Genital Warts :
aka-Condyloma Acuminatum, venereal warts, HPV, Human
Papillomavirus.
Genital warts are caused by a DNA virus that leads to a
condition typically known as HPV. Numerous subtypes of HPV
exist. Some are relatively benign and slow growing while
others such as HPV type 16 and 18 can lead to cervical
cancer. Both men and women can be infected with HPV.
Genital warts in men are usually obvious. HPV infection of
the cervix in women is obviously only found on PAP examination
during a women's gynecological exam. While genital warts in men
are more visible, some can be subtle. HPV is estimated to exist
in 15 % of the adult population. Risk of transmission to a fetus
can exist, and condyloma has been reported to infect the upper
respiratory tract.
